Comparative Studies on Respiration
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Organic acids when treated with H(2)O(2) and Fe(2)(SO(4))(3) produce CO(2) at a rate that can be measured by the indicator method. 2. In the case of acids containing a double bond, the rate of production of CO(2) can be varied by the addition of an anesthetic. The changes in the rate of production of CO(2) under the influence of a typical anesthetic, such as chloroform, show a striking resemblance to the reaction of the organism.

Comparative Studies on Respiration
These experiments show that 7.3 and 3.65 per cent ether solutions cause an increase in respiration followed by a decrease. The results agree with those of Haas on Laminaria, of Gustafson on higher fungi, and of Mrs. Brooks on bacteria. They do not agree with the theory of Verworn that anesthesia is a kind of asphyxia and that it decreases respiration.
متن کاملComparative effects of scopoletin and aflatoxin B1 on bovine hepatic mitochondrial respiration in vitro.
A comparative study of the in vitro effects of the coumarin compounds, scopoletin and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), on bovine (Bos indicus) hepatic mitochondrial respiration was carried out polarographically, using isocitrate -NAD+ (3 - site), succinate (2 - site), and reduced cytochrome c (1 - site), as respiratory substrates. Both scopoletin and AFB1 elicited a substrate--dependent stimulation or inhi...
متن کاملComparative Studies on Respiration
A series of investigations on respiration with improved quantitative methods has been commenced. The first of these are here described. They show that when anesthetics are employed in sufficient concentration to produce any result, plants show a rise in the rate of respiration which is followed by a fall. In the animals studied, the rise (found in higher concentrations only) was preceded by a t...
متن کاملCOMPARATIVE STUDIES ON RESPIRATION. X. Toxic AND ANTAGONISTIC EFFECTS OF MAGNESIUM IN RELATION TO THE RESPIRATION OF BACILLUS SUBTILIS
The behavior of magnesium is of special interest since in studies on antagonism magnesium has been found to occupy an intermediate position between the monovalent and the bivalent metals. In many cases it can act as an antagonist to calcium as well as to sodium. As no investigations on respiration have been undertaken from this point of view, the writer has made some experiments on this subject...
متن کاملComparative Studies on Respiration
In petals of Salvia high concentrations of ether cause an increase in oxygen consumption and in the production of CO(2), while at the same time a decrease occurs in the acidity of the cell contents.
متن کاملEffect of Temperature on the Respiration Rate and the Respiratory Quotient of Some Vegetables.
Introduction Numerous experiments have been conducted to determine the respiration rates of various vegetables after harvest. Nevertheless, it is well-nigh impossible to gain a clear knowledge of the comparative rates of respiration exhibited by different kinds of vegetables from the scattered data in the literature, because of the wide variations in temperature and other conditions under which...
